A Role of the Pathologist in Personalized Medicine for Lung Cancer Patients

in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, but the mortality from lung cancer has decreased. It is attributed to successful disease prevention, improved early detection secondary to implementation of lowdose CT scan screening, and improved management including neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy for early-stage tumors, improved management including neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy for early-stage tumors, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy mostly for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The similar trend has been seen in Japan as well. Notably, pathologists significantly contribute to the management of lung cancer patients by providing accurate diagnosis, subtyping, biomarker assessment including PD-L1 immunohistochemistry and molecular testing for targetable oncogenic driver alterations as well as the evaluation of post neoadjuvant resections for residual viable tumor. In this talk, I will describe these items in detail.
