Anatomy I

Outline
The unique leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) signal pathway between mother and fetuses have been identified in rodents (Simamura et al., 2010). The maternal LIF signals induce adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the placenta, which in turn induces LIF secretion from nucleated erythroblasts of fetuses. Finally, LIF of fetal origin contributes to the brain development and erythropoiesis. In our laboratory, details of the molecular mechanisms and its physiological functions have been extensively investigated. Then, we have investigated the interaction between an failure of this maternal-fetal signal relay of LIF and a risk of prenatal origin of autism, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
We have developed the new method for making biological specimens (brain, lung, intestine, other organs, whole embryos, etc.) transparent to observe the internal structures. Using this technique, details of GFP expressing cells in the deep area can be detected. Whole mount bone staining of small fishes (medaka, zebra fishes), frogs (Xenopus laebis) or mouse and rat fetuses are rapidly completed with this technique.
