Biochemistry I

Outline
DNA double-strand break (DSB) is one of the most serious threats for cells. Improper repair of DSBs leads to cell death or carcinogenesis. DSBs can be induced by exogenous stimuli such as ionizing radiation, and endogenous normal cellular processes such as DNA replication, meiosis and V(D)J recombination. Since we found 53BP1 as a tumor suppressor p53-binding protein in 1994, many laboratories, including ours, have shown that 53BP1 is involved in cellular responses to DSBs.
Goals in our research are:
1) clarifying molecular mechanisms for the cell-cycle checkpoints and repair of DSBs.
2) generating a novel method in radiation therapy for cancer stem cells.
